Content: Mahakala is a form of Lord Shiva originally worshiped in the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling at Ujjain. According to Hindu mythology a long time ago there was a man living with his family in a place Avanti in Ujjain. He was a great devotee of Lord Shiva. He worshiped the great lord with his family. There was a Demon living nearby in a hill called Ratanmala namedm as Dushana who was against all type of Vedic rituals and worship of Gods and used to destroy all those who worshiped God. Dushana with his army attacked the city Avanti and subsequently came to know about the Devotee Family. He attacked the family with his army and tried to destroy the Shivling they were worshiping. At that instant lord Shiva appeared in a furious form from the Shivling and at whose glimpse Dushana with all his army was burnt in to ashes. This form of the lord is known as Mahakala swarup. The Mahakala was furious and beyond explanation he was so angry that roared furiously making the whole world shiver with fear. The devotee family kept on chanting the mantras and shlokas of lord Shiva to please the Mahakala and finally succeeded and the pleased Mahakala granted them their wish and stayed at that place as Jyotirling for all his Devotees. Mahakal Swarup of Lord Shiva is said to be there to keep peace in the world by destroying evil powers. By a glimpse of lord Shiva in this form burns all evil powers and creates positive energy and provides peace to the Devotees. Thus Mahakal temple is a place where a devotee finds peace of mind and purifies his inner self.
